Antique Glass Butter Churn

Are you seeking a unique antique item that is unlike any other? If so, you may want to consider acquring an antique glass butter churn. These glass churns were used during the 1920s and even before for the purposes of making homemade butter. Butter is made by churning cream. The churning action separates the fat from the liquid which is essentially the butter. While you may imagine large wooden vats that people had to stand to churn, glass churners were popular with early American families because they produced the perfect amount of butter in a convenient way.

Two of the main companies who made glass churns were Dazey and Universal. These churns were operated via handheld crank and came in different sizes for different needs. You can expect one of these churns to cost well over $100 in today's antique market. The price could be much more depending on the age, size and condition of the churn. There were glass churns sold in the Montgomery Ward catalog in the 1930s. These churns were able to make butter in under ten minutes, which was certainly a benefit for busy homemakers of the time period.

One of the most old fashioned types of glass butter churns was made by the Thomas Manufacturing Company. These churns were labeled as Old Fashioned Mixers and could churn butter, mix drinks and mash fruits and vegetables. They featured a glass jar and wooden top with paddle. The reason this churn is so old fashioned is because of its simplicity. All of the antique churns on the market today, while not practical for use today, are whimsical and a fun addition to any antiques collection. They give you an idea of what life was like for families many years ago. Today, you can go to the supermarket and buy butter. Back then, you had to make it yourself!

The Internet is a great source for finding the perfect antique glass butter churn for your collection. Because this item is not as plentiful as other types of antiques it may be difficult to find in your local antique shops. By shopping online you can locate various old churns for reasonable prices and have them shipped to your home. Ebay is a great source of antiques including glass churns. In addition there are also online antique shops and dealers who sell all kinds of antique items including collectible glass.
