Antique Glass Ware

Collecting antique glass ware is a rewarding hobby enjoyed by many. One of the most enjoyable things about collecting old glass is all the selection available. There are so many beautiful pieces from many different eras. In this article we will take a look at some of the most widely collected types of antique glass. One very popular type of antique glass that many collectors enjoy is called carnival glass. You may also see this type of glass referred to as carnivale glass as well. This type of glass dates all the way back to 1907, when it was first introduced.

At the time of its introduction, carnival glass was called Iridescent Ware because of its shiny metallic finish that changed color with when the piece hit the light or was moved around. Popular colors included purple, orange, green and even white. White carnival glass is sometimes called milk glass. There was even a type of carnival glass called Radium Glassware which featured small amounts of radium salt to produce a green glow under ultraviolet light. At the time, the hazards of uranium were not understood. It wasn't until the 1950s that carnival glass got its name.

Another widely collected type of glass is Depression glass. Depression glass was made between the 1920s and the 1940s. This glass was cheap in price, not the finest in quality, and widely available due to mass production. It was so widely available that it was given away as a gift with purchase by many businesses at the time. It was even sometimes included inside boxes of soap flakes or cereal as a prize. This glass featured pretty patterns and colors like pink, red, amber, green and more. Today there are certain pieces of Depression-era glass that are quite valuable.

You may also find vintage and retro pieces of glass to be collectible. There are certain pieces like cranberry and ruby glass that many collectors enjoy that were made in the 1940s and 1950s. Still others enjoy collecting old leaded glass kitchenware. The best thing to do if you are new to the world of collecting antique glass ware is to get some books that help you identify various pieces. A few helpful titles are as follows: Starting to Collect Glass by John Sandon, Collectors Encyclopedia of Depression Glass by Gene and Cathy Florence and the Collectors Encyclopedia of American Art Glass by John A. Shuman.
